What's new

Today Today - October 2014

Wind died down a bit so did 107kms up north. Lots of branches and leaves on the roads.....

Is this like a half Half-fast?

One of the great things about riding is getting back home to the dog:

That may not be home, but our dog loves to lick the sweat off my face and head, and then legs when I put her down.
You put her down? Why...? She looks quite healthy! :)

Walking back from lunch and I spied a beat up messenger 26inch mtb with an unusually chubby rear hub. Turns out it was a Cycleops power meter thingamajig and it looks like the messenger also left his garmin edge 500 attached to the mount. That hub and the garmin must've cost more than the whole bike :)

Found this in my mailbox today.

I harbor no illusions of becoming a "frame builder", but I would like to try building one before I die. Somewhat ironically I will almost certainly die as a direct result of doing this.

Cool.

From the description on the back cover I take it that principals (sic) of publishing this book did not include getting it proof-read.

Just 90kms this morning. Did one of my normal rides in reverse. Weather changed here. When riding Ok but when stopped soon got cold....

Trued a wheel on my newly-received cheapo Minoura truing stand. Got it pleasingly straight, then stuck a tyre on and tested it again. Still straight.

This bodes well for the next phase of the cheapo Chinese stealth bike build - building my own wheels. I've even bought some "Wheelsmith Spoke Prep" after @TCC harped on about it being vital and grumbling about my plan to use linseed oil. Better be amazing for the price - it's about 150 yen per ml! Taking me well out of my Ebeneezer Scrooge comfort zone, that is.

Lightweight rear wheel went out of true in protest at being put on the indoor trainer. Took it to the local shop for truing but the local shop mechanic had something more important to do than open his shop, so stuck my Ultegra on the rear for a weight penalty of 250 g . Feeling a bit sad about that, I cheered myself up with some cleaning therapy and now feel confident my newly shiny drivetrain will do it in the hills tomorrow.

Was great to get out on the river this morning after a rain interruption to normal service. Got out right on dawn and as I was crossing the bridge over the Arakawa, the Sun was a giant orange orb rising low in the sky, glowing reflections of tall buildings on the distant horizon and gave the world a menacing, bladerunner in orange kind of feel to it.

I love this time of year, not too cold, still in the summer kit with an undershirt, but a 5:30 start will have me out before the sun, and enjoying all the colors and peace that come with a waking world.

Changed the saddle on the Anchor for new carbon Specialised one so thought what I could do with the old one and some of the other bits around the garage. Took the old cycle off the turbo trainer and made a 4.5mm spacer to fit the 7 speed cassette to my spare Mavic Open Pro wheels, fitted my old SPD pedals and saddle and hey presto a new Winter hack. The gearing is too tall as 52/42 but will do for now.P24-10-14_16.40[01].JPG

Very jealous. The UK at the moment is cold, wet & brown from all the shed leaves. Rode to work on Weds in knicks, long sleeve vest, long sleeve top & gillet and was till only just warm enough.
