History of Japanese professional woman Keirin race



Woman Keirin started as an open race when Kokura Keirin was held in November, 1948.
It became an official program in 1949 the next year.



Afterwards, woman riders that 18~19 years old registers at first becomes about 30 years
old and has gained a lead physical strength and ability.

Moji Keirin race (1951)


Woman riders targeted in the ticket, lost the interest of the fan gradually, and the Nagoya Keirin race of holding became the last race of woman Keirin race on September 8, 1964.

The last professional woman keirin race(1964)


All woman Keirin riders' registration was blotted out dated October 31, 1964, and the Japanese professional woman Keirin race was abolished.

Girl's Keirin 2009 "Venus series" (not gambling race)



This series is amateur top level women rider race.
1st stage 01/03/2009 Keiokaku velodrome
2nd stage 01/06/2009 Tachikawa velodrome
3rd stage 02/14/2009 Takamatsu velodrome
4th stage 02/28/2009 Chiba velodrome
5th stage 03/14/2009 Matsuyama velodrome
6th stage 03/29/2009 Nagoya velodrome

Rider of the name said Mr.Hisateru Sakurai(57 Y.O.!!) to this Tachikawa Keirin race participates.
He is very strong and famous rider that became Japan Keirin champion before.


Frame that he has is VENUS frame used when winning the championship in 1975.




(The VENUS frame atelier has already closed.)

He finish the professional Keirin rider life of 37 years.
He retires his last race on 29.Dec.2008.

Many our friends go to celebrate the last race of him.
Cheers his long rider life!!

He headed for the start gate.


Start gate.


His last Keirin race.


Last race was over.


He did the happiest goal to his wife.


Big television.


A lot of spectators were waiting for them by the Homestretch.


A lot of flower for him.


His Kalavinka bike takes a rest through all eternity.

Great thread Tomity Very comprehensive and personal. This is a wonderful resource for the many people who come to TCC looking for information on Keirin. And for those who don't it still makes a great read.

I read the linked Japan Times article which quotes you:

"Toshihiko Tomita, better known as Tomity, graduated in 1982 from the school (Japan Bicycle Racing School in Shuzenji, Shizuoka Prefecture), which opened in 1968. "I've been riding as a pro for 27 years," says Tomity, 51."
